The Earned Income Tax Credit Program (EIC) is a government benefit for working people with or without dependents. You must file a federal income tax return and have some earned income during the tax year. You may also apply for this tax credit for the past three years, with the understanding that the criteria has recently changed. |

Some communities have programs to provide older people with free or low-cost income tax preparation assistance. Many of these programs are volunteer organizations, like VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly). |
